day 1: January 16th 2016

Dan Kaufman and John Bolinger of Barbez kicked it off with their new duo, John & Dan

A semi-reunion mashup featuring members of Cop Shoot Cop / Swans followed—with Jim Coleman, Natz, Phil Puleo and Algis Kizys

White Hills performed a written piece exclusive to BC35

Brian Viglione (Violent Femmes, Dresden Dolls), Paul Wallfisch (Swans, Little Annie), and Ajda Snyder created a unique backup group for songs composed by Snyder

Performance artist Robbie O Leaver led a set with Paul Wallfisch, Phil Puleo, and Jim Coleman, as Birdthrower

Michael Bazini (Controlled Bleeding) Jim Coleman, and Torch performed a new industrial piece as Mega Tormenta

Live Skull—a No Wave band formed in 1982 – reunited with original members Mark C, Marnie Jaffe and Rich Hutchins. Debuting new songs, they called themselves New Old Skull

Ivan Lipp (Pop 1280), Dave W. (White Hills),Skeleton Boy (WOMAN), and Martin Bisi did a noise jam with 2 drummers— Phil Puleo (Swans, Cop Shoot Cop) and Rich Hutchins (Live Skull)

Day 1 wrapped with a final noise extravaganza from Dan Kaufman (Barbez), Brian Viglione (Violent Femmes, Dresden Dolls), Paul Wallfisch, Jason LaFarge (Pants Exploder), Neil Exall (The Mercurymen) and Martin Bisi


Day 2 : January 17, 2016

Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch), Martin Bisi, Stu Spasm (Lubricated Goat), Skeleton Boy (WOMAN), and Alyse Lamb (Parlor Walls) performed the opening track of the BC35 album, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"

Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls, Violent Femmes), and Don Godwin started off the day with a zydeco-driven jam led by Sxip Shirey on megaphone

Sissi Schulmeister and Steve Moses of Alice Donut (Alternative Tentacles Records) were joined by Ernest Anderson and Laura Ortman, and called this new lineup SAMO—an acronym of their last names

JADO—a first name acronym of Oliver Rivera Drew, Andrea Havis, Jeannie Fry and Diego Ferri – played 2 new songs written for BC35

JG Thirlwell (FOETUS) and Dana Schechter (Insect Ark, GNAW) prepared a piece with Laura Ortman on violin, and featured an impromptu 'choir' of audience members holding out notes at Thirwell's direction.

Tidal Chanel performed with poet Billy Cancel over electro industrial sounds by Genevieve Fernworthy (LAUDS)

Andy Hawkins (Blind Idiot God) did a heavy set with Algis Kizys (Swans) and Laura Ortman, together with alternating drummers Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Retrovirus) and Rich Hutchins (Live Skull)

Violist Genevieve Kammel Morris (LAUDS) brought a 3-minute participatory performance featuring vocals + bowed instruments sustaining the note G (at roughly 390Hz) including Lawry Zilmrah bowing a modified bicycle wheel with pickups, Megan Moncrief on ukelin, Valerie Kuehne and John Schwartz on cello, and Jason LaFarge, Laura Ortman, and Kolin Zein on violin

The BC35 weekend closed with guitar + drums duo, Cinema Cinema, joined by sax player David Lackner (Synthetic Love Dream, Blue Jazz TV) and bassist Mikel Dos Santos (The Realistics)

Post / Production

Creating pieces from the improvisations, along with editing and selective balancing, took weeks at a time per song –

a behemoth had been created.

Overdubs soon followed on the pieces that were written specifically for the event,

and in the case of some ensembles, a member would handle the mixing.


Mastering was completed in May 2017 by Fred Kevorkian.
